FAMILY OF THE MONTH FOR AUGUST

The family of the month is the Muniz family. Maria Carmen Muniz is an adult education ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages) student, and Even Start Family Literacy parent, and her son, Bryan, two years old, is a preschool student. Maria's daughter, Nancy, is an infant care paraprofessional in the Even Start preschool.

Maria Carmen, who is married to Antonio, did not have any formal education in her country, Mexico. She did not go to school as a child, so going to school is new to her. She is making great progress and the staff wants to recognize this and the fact that the entire family is working hard to make improvements and changes.

Maria Carmen had this to say (in Spanish): "I was afraid to speak (English), because I could not express myself. I would not go anywhere. I felt helpless."

She explains that her goal for attending this program is that she wants to learn English so that she can get a job and better herself.

"I'm learning that I can learn to speak English and that I can communicate with others. My son, Bryan, has also grown and learned a lot. I'm happy because of all the people who tell me they see my progress. That makes me feel proud. I don't feel helpless anymore."

In addition to Nancy and Bryan, Mr. and Mrs. Muniz have two other children: Carolina, seventeen, and Valdemar, fourteen.

We congratulate this family on its noticeable effort to make such great gains, and give our best wishes for continued success.
